Sony VAIO NR160E/W November 21, 2007

The good: Least expensive VAIO laptop yet; keeps Sony’s excellent laptop keyboard, plus extras such as an Express Card slot. The bad: Looks and feels noticeably cheaper than more expensive VAIOs, loaded down with performance-killing bloatware.
The bottom line: Kudos to Sony for releasing the sub-$1,000 VAIO NR160. It’s a perfectly functional, budget 15-inch laptop–we just wish it didn’t stray so far from the excellent industrial design of the company’s more expensive systems.

RIM BlackBerry Curve October 1, 2007
Posted by admin in : Mobile Devices , add a comment
The good: The RIM BlackBerry 8320 offers integrated Wi-Fi and works with T-Mobile’s HotSpot@Home service so you can make calls via Wi-Fi. The smart phone also features a nice, sleek design; a spacious QWERTY keyboard; a 2-megapixel camera; popular IM clients; and good call quality.
The bad: The Curve’s camera can’t record videos, and there’s no 3G support. The BlackBerry Web browser isn’t quite as sophisticated as those on competing smart phones.
The bottom line: The RIM BlackBerry Curve (aka BlackBerry 8320) for T-Mobile is the best BlackBerry we’ve seen to date as it offers Wi-Fi, best-of-breed design, and excellent performance.

The good: Nice photos and performance; big LCD display; usable as an MP3 player.
The bad: Awkward, occasionally frustrating design; eccentric Wi-Fi feature set.
The bottom line: An overpriced, overweight, and oddball camera, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-G1 takes decent photos, but its ancillary features–Wi-Fi and MP3 playback–aren’t usefully implemented.

Apple iPod Nano (third generation, 8GB, black) September 15, 2007

The good: The third-generation iPod Nano offers crisp, bright video playback, an exceptionally thin all-metal body, above-average battery life, built-in games, and an advanced user interface.
The bad: We’re not crazy about the wider body, the smaller scroll wheel, the lack of video output, and the average-sounding audio quality.
The bottom line: The shape may have changed, but Apple’s relentless attention to detail remains. The third generation of the iPod Nano provides loads of entertainment for a down-to-earth price.

Sony NWZ-S615F (2GB, silver) September 11, 2007
Posted by admin in : MP3s , add a comment
The good: The Sony NWZ-S610 series features a compact design with a high-quality feel and an ample screen. The user interface is intuitive, and there are plenty of features to choose from, such as an FM radio and photo and video playback. No more awful SonicStage software: this Walkman is a PlaysForSure device supporting subscription tracks as well as unprotected WMA, MP3, and even AAC files. The player offers good sound quality and an excellent rated battery life.
The bad: The Sony NWZ-S610 series doesn’t offer any exceptional new technology, and there are cheaper competitors that offer the same features.
The bottom line: The Sony NWZ-S610 series Walkman doesn’t bring anything striking or new to the table, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s a quality MP3 player with nice extras and a killer battery life. Plus, Sony got rid of SonicStage–the best news ever.

The good:
- Excellent levels of detail
- Better contrast than the more expensive M8
- Onboard tuner is breathtakingly good
The bad:
- Not as good as the M8 for blacks
- Picture not as lifelike as some others
- Only 720p
The bottomline:
Without getting into the whole plasma vs LCD thing we can just say the Samsung LA40R81BD is a very good example of either technology. Highly recommended.
